NEED HELP WITH MY PHONE!?

right, i have a phone which is an O2, and i have inserted a virgin simcard init, just to see if it works. but it didnt tell me that 'sim was not registered' or, i dont have any signal either. so will it deffos not work, or do i need to take it to a phone shop? please help!! (links aswell, but useful ones please!) thanks
