What happens if you lose your phone in the middle of a 12 month sim only vodafone contract?

I was thinking about signing a 12 month sim only contract with vodafone, but wanted to know what happens if you lose that phone with the sim in it? The answer i am hoping not to get is that you have to carry on paying the monthly bill until the contract ends!!!
