If a young cactus sprout is detached from it's roots, could they possibly grow back again?

Just wondering, and it sounds like a stupid question I know, but it's still growing and all, so I thought maybe there was some hope for the thing after being knocked off the shelf in it's pot and covered in mounds of dirt piled on it before I found it. Thank you!
