When do banana trees sprout bananas?

Banana do not grow on trees strictly speaking. How long it takes depends on where you are growing them. In Melbourne (australia) for example, it can take up to three years from planting to getting the first fruit, which may then take two years to come to maturity. In tropical areas, where bananas are more commonly grown, fruiting and maturity can happen within two years.
