How did the E-coli bacteria arrive on the bean-sprouts?

E. coli follows a fecal-oral route of transmission. Agriculture and food processing has a number of opportunities for the fecal matter to end up on food including (but not limited to) irrigation with contaminated water supplies, animals in fields, washing with contaminated water, use of organic fertilizers, and farm and factory workers not washing their hands.
